Importing your existing contacts
Learn how to import your existing contacts into Pulse using a CSV file or your connected store.
April 20, 2026
Whether you're switching from another platform or just getting started, at some point you'll need to bring your existing contacts into Pulse.
This happens during the Contacts step of setup, and there are two ways to do it.
Option 1: Upload a CSV
A CSV file is just a simple spreadsheet file. Most email or contact tools let you export your subscriber list as one.
If you already have your contacts saved this way, or can export them from your previous platform, this is usually the fastest route.
How to do it:
- On the Contacts step, click Choose file under "Upload CSV".
- Select the CSV file from your computer.
- Click Queue import.
Your contacts will then be queued up for import into your Pulse workspace.
Option 2: Use your connected store
If you've already connected your store or website, covered in the Connection step of setup, Pulse can pull your contacts directly from there instead of requiring a separate file.
How to do it:
- On the Contacts step, look for the Store contacts option.
- Select My contacts will come from my connected store.
- Click Use connected store.
This is often the more convenient option if your contacts already live inside your store's platform, since there's no exporting or file handling involved.
Not ready yet?
If you don't have your contact list ready, or you'd simply rather deal with it later, click Skip, I'll add contacts later.
This won't block the rest of your setup. You can return to import contacts at any time from your workspace settings.
What to check after importing
Once your contacts are in, it's worth a quick look to confirm:
- The total contact count matches roughly what you expected.
- Any existing segments or tags carried over correctly, if you were migrating from another platform.
- No obviously broken or incomplete entries slipped through. This is especially worth checking with CSV uploads, since formatting issues in the original file can sometimes cause problems.
Why this step matters for deliverability
An imported list that's outdated or full of invalid addresses can hurt your bounce rate right out of the gate.
If you're uploading a CSV, especially an older one, it's worth a quick pass to remove any addresses you know are no longer valid, rather than importing it blindly.
See the "Keeping your deliverability healthy" article for more information.
If something goes wrong during import
If your CSV fails to import, or your connected store isn't pulling contacts correctly, reach out through the chat widget inside Pulse.
The support team can help troubleshoot the specific issue rather than leaving you stuck.
